The place
Alleppey is the doorway to the backwaters — a lattice of canals, rivers and lakes where life moves at the speed of a rowing boat. The Kettuvallam houseboats, once rice barges stitched together without a single nail, are now floating homes with cooked-onboard meals and private decks for the sunset.
North of town lies Kuttanad, the "Rice Bowl of Kerala", where farming happens below sea level and villages are reached by canoe. This is the Kerala of postcards — and it is even better in person.
— Rain on a tin roof, and the smell of wet palms.
