The place
Where the Chalakudy river tears through the Sholayar forests, it drops eighty feet in a horseshoe of white water — Athirappilly, the largest waterfall in Kerala, thundering under a permanent veil of spray and rainbows.
A short way upstream, Vazhachal falls runs faster and shallower through a narrower gorge. Between June and September the monsoon doubles the volume; in the dry months the pools below are for swimming. Hornbills patrol the canopy — this is prime Great Hornbill country.
— The thunder of water a mile before you see it.
